Day 31: Barcelona #3

Yesterday, I was eating a late lunch up at the passenger buffet food court, called Oceanview, and I overheard a 18 or 19 year old female American passenger (from San Diego) talking about her day in Cannes with 5 or 6 friends. She described it as "boring", as they just went to the beach for 2 hours and then got back on the ship. Her next sentence was quite enlightening...and I quote:

"I wish we had just docked in Monaco, cuz then we could just go to our house for an hour and then get back on the ship."

There are many things wrong with this situation and I'll highlight my favorites. Is she serious? A boring day????? WE WERE IN CANNES, FRANCE. Here's my day: Tim, Stu, and I walked around, climbed this big hill to a castle-ish structure in the middle of the city, walked through the little streets and eventually landed at a great creperie. Our food was wonderful (pictures coming soon): Tim had a panini, Stu had some sort of anchovy crepe, and I had a classic crepe au sucre vanille. Then we checked out the beaches, walked along the boardwalk and paroused the uber-posh shops. We found a perfume shop called Fragonard, which is one of my favorites because back in 8th grade, we visited their main parfumerie in the French countryside. We walked around a bit more, saw some sweet cars and other stuff, then went back to the ship. A pretty great day, all things considered. Not my favorite of all the places we've visited, but by no means was it.....boring.

Anyone who finds an afternoon on the beach in Cannes must be flawed to their very core. And she has a house in Monaco??? My family has a house in Rehoboth Beach, Deleware, that we inherited from my grandparents. Its 2.5 hours from DC, an easy drive for a weekend getaway. Its more of a cottage than anything else, but its perfect for the beach. This girl has a house in Monaco. Any place you have to board a plane to get to is not my idea of a vacation home. And its in Monaco! That place is ridiculous in general, and tiny, so I'm sure property is unfathomably expensive.

And really, if she came on a cruise to just complain about how she'd rather go back to her vacation house and not be on the cruise, that's a reason to not go on the cruise in the first place. And then, all of the people she was sitting with just sat there and agreed with her. Are they all like that as well? Whatever. I don't know. I'm not even sure why I'm surprised but it doesn't matter. There could be some factors that I don't know about, like her Mom and Dad split up and her Dad moved to Monaco, but I don't really care. I'm done ranting.

I write to you from an Irish pub in Barcelona called Flaherty's, where I just had an incredible cheeseburger. Its been over a month since I had a burger, and it was spectacular. For all you LU people...it even tops the legendary Nickel burger (I know its not the best burger ever, but its still a good point of reference). I'll post pictures of our day in Cannes sometime soon. I'm looking forward to this next 12 day cruise, as our quartet has the night off during the overnight in Venice. We're probably going to visit Nice (or Monaco, hehe), Florence, maybe Rome, and we go back to Montenegro (which was breathtaking).
